F.A.M.E. for March
March’s Fine Arts Mini Experience (FAME) was taught during the week of March 10-17th and featured the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer’s “Woman in Blue” and the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi’s concerto “Spring “ from the FOUR SEASONS.
Students learned why Vermeer was known for his exquisite rendering of light and shadow in many of his oil paintings. We enjoyed viewing a variety of paintings by Vermeer, and looked for similarities between his works. Students also learned a bit about Vermeer’s life in 17th century Holland, and why it was so expensive to paint with certain types of colors…especially the color blue.
The musical element of harmony in the Spring section of Vivaldi’s FOUR SEASONS was noted and classes enjoyed listening for the bird’s spring song in the piece. Students then created their own harmony by singing two songs concurrently.
