FAME for February
February’s Fine Arts Mini Experience (FAME) was taught during the week of February 22-26th and featured the American artist Albert Bierstadt’s landscape painting “In the Mountains” and the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ rousing patriotic composition, “Finlandia”.
Students discussed how the senses can influence art and music and got a chance to identify mystery scents. They were also treated to a few rounds of “guess that sound” — which all of the students enjoyed. This tied in to our composer, Sibelius’ life, as he was known to immerse himself in the sights, sounds and smells of his native Finland when composing his music. He loved string instruments, the violin in particular, and so we watched a video of a young string quartet (all just eight years old!) performing. We wrapped up our music lesson by listening to a dynamic “Finlandia” and hearing the story of Finland’s brave uprising and victory over Russia. Sibelius’ music unified the country in its fight for glory.
Our artist for the day, Albert Bierstadt, is remembered for his Landscapes of the American West which were filled with light and shadow. He painted scenes of gorgeous mountains, serene lakes, and unbelievable sights of the Unites States in the late 1800s. His artwork encouraged thousands of people to move West and see the scenes for themselves. Bierstadt’s artwork inspired a nation, and in part, because of these works of art, the National Park Service of America was started 100 years ago!
