Oil Pastels Create Jewel Like Colors!
4th --8th grade Students were asked to think of a Banyan tree, growing in the water. The branches reach up towards the sky, but also dip down towards the murky water. With this in mind, they created their own dramatic trees with black tempera paint. Then they were told to look at the negative spaces, and think about how to fill them with color. A lesson on color placement, and oil pastel blending was very helpful, and then they began to create. The final touch was the illusion of reflection on the water.
Although the assignment seemed as though it might turn out many trees that looked the same, the reality was far from that! The jewel like tones and the variety of tree shapes created works of art that looked like spectacular stained glass windows. So impressive!
