Night Watch
Rembrandt van Rijn
Our final Fine Arts Mini Experience (FAME) of the year was taught during the week of April 29- May 2nd and featured the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn’s “The Night Watch” , and the French composer Georges Bizet’s Opera “Carmen” with an emphasis on “the Toreador Song”.
Students examined the element of Light and Shadow in the art work of Rembrandt. They learned about the artist’s life, and about the interesting history of one of the most famous paintings in the world- “The Night Watch” We also looked at some of Rembrandt’s self portraits, and few of his etchings, as well.
As they listened to Georges Bizet’s Carmen, students were introduced to the theatrical form of Opera. We watched a video version of the “Toreador song,” and a silly one of “Habenera” sung by muppets. They learned the story of Carmen (as was age appropriate) and listened for the musical element of Dynamics in all of the pieces.
