September F.A.M.E.
This month’s Fame lesson touched on two artists. One was Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov -- a Russian composer who wrote“ The Sea and Sinbad's Ship” (from “Scheherazade”). In our lesson we focused on the elements of rhythm and melody in the composition. Storytelling though music was also discussed, as the students learned the story of Scheherazade and the Arabian Nights. Listening to the music, we heard the voices of characters in the Arabian Nights stories, and specifically, the sound of the sea in the story of Sinbad.
Sinbad the Sailor was further explored through painting, as we learned about German artist Paul Klee’s watercolor -- “Sinbad at Sea”. Students learned about the history of Paul Klee and his love of color. We experimented with color contrast and the use of pattern and color to create a mood. Next week in art class, we will follow up with an art project that tries to channel the ideas of Paul Klee.
