F.A.M.E. for December
December’s Fine Arts Mini Experience (FAME) was taught during the week of December 1st-4th and featured the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani’s painting “Bride and Groom” and the German composer Richard Wagner’s composition, “The Wedding March” from the Opera “Lohengrin”.
The theme of this FAME lesson was “Weddings”. We discussed different wedding traditions from around the world, and then acted out our own version of a traditional American wedding. The kids were very enthusiastic!
The short and tumultuous life of our artist was discussed as we looked at examples of many of his works. Students were taught how to recognize a Modigliani painting or sculpture. (long faces, long necks, vacant eyes, lots of line) If you go to the deYoung museum in San Francisco, your child should be able to point out an original Modigliani, so you can experience it in person!
We reviewed the concept of an Opera, heard the story of Wagner’s music, and learned a bit about Wagner’s life and times. We not only listened to his famous Wedding March, but we also watched a video of his most famous piece ‘The Ride of the Valkyries” and the students learned the Norse mythology behind this dramatic piece of music.
