F.A.M.E. for February
February’s Fine Arts Mini Experience (FAME) was taught during the week of February 3-7th and featured the music and compositions of W..C. Handy, and the art works of Andy Warhol.
Students first reviewed a short history of slavery in America, and how the work songs of the slaves eventually became the basis for Jazz and the Blues in this country. They were introduced to the concept of using your body to make musical rhythm (hamboning) and even got to try this themselves. After learning about why W.C Handy was named the “Father of the Blues”, students got to listen to several versions of “St. Louis Blues” together.
We next learned about another distinctly American Artist – Andy Warhol. Students found out about the idea of Pop Art and were introduced to Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Can series and his “Marilyn Monroe” prints. We discussed how an artist makes a silkscreen and markets and sells many copies to interested buyers. Andy Warhol’s kooky lifestyle and silly wig were mentioned as well as some of his other eccentricities.
Students came away from the lesson understanding two major American trendsetters in this country’s musical and artistic history.
