Banners to Decorate the town of Sunol
The art elective class was asked by the town of Sunol to design banners to hang from the new lightpoles in town. All of the students were asked to participate. There were eight winners selected. Tom Harland, a resident of Sunol, and a professor of Art at Ohlone College, was the judge. This is what he told the contestants after the eight winners were selected:
"I was very pleased with the artwork submitted for the Sunol Banner Contest. All of you should be proud of your efforts.
The selected works all had in common a strong use of the full format and rich colors that will transfer well onto the full size banners. I think the images are all strong enough to be seen well from a distance.
Thanks to all of you for your participation and I can’t wait to see the finished work

THE EIGHT WINNING SUBMISSIONS
This is what they looked like painted on small copy sized paper:
And here is what they look like as finished banners:
Once the paintings were selected, they needed to be enlarged to fit much larger banners. They were painted in acrylic to withstand the weather.
Working on the Banners
Although each image was imagined by only one art elective student, it took the whole class to actually paint the banners and get them done in time for the February 1st Deadline! Here they are, all working on the banners together:
Putting up the Banners on February 5th
On a cold and cloudy Tuesday afternoon, we took a field trip to Main Street to watch Mr. Harland install the winning banners.
Everyone in the class did a fantastic job. It was was very difficult to choose just eight! Here were the other 14 submissions :
