Basket Weaving
Students in the 4th grade, 6th grade and 7th grade were introduced to the art of basket weaving. The fourth graders used strawberry baskets to create lovely little baskets in different yarns, patterns and designs. The assignment taught them the concept of the "basket weave" stitch.
Sixth and Seventh graders were given the more difficult task of learning to coil weave a basket. This is based on the Basket weavings of the Ohlone Indians in the area. All school children in California learn about these baskets and the kids were excited to give it a try. Starting with a simple rope, the students took organic colored yarns and wrapped and stitched their baskets into being. It was a tricky skill to learn, but once they got it, some of the kids were hooked! Lots of them even came to art class during lunch to work on their baskets.
