Constitution Day Capitol Buildings
1st through 3rd graders were celebrating constitution day on the 17th of September. It seemed a perfect opportunity to use art as a follow up activity. This was a two day project. The first day was spent creating a firework filled background. The kids had fun using oil pastels to create the color. Then they were allowed to experiment with white paint on a toothbrush to achieve the fun spray of paint over the whole backdrop.
Day two was a study of symmetry. First we practiced cutting things from scrap paper that were symmetrical, then we moved on to our black paper, and a directed drawing of the perfectly symmetrical Capitol Building in Washington DC.Kids were also taught what a Silhouette was.
Although I am still cleaning my classroom from all of the white paint spatterings that occurred, the results turned out very nicely, indeed.
