El Greco - View of Toledo
March’s Fine Arts Mini Experience (FAME) was taught during the week of March 12th – March 16th and featured the artist El Greco’s “View of Toledo”, and the composer ModestMussorgsky’s music “Night on Bald Mountain” and “Pictures at an Exhibition”.
Students participated in activities that demonstrated how all forms of art can communicate mood. They discovered that artists often tell complete stories through their creations.
The biography of Mussorgsky, a Russian composer who celebrated his heritage in “musical paintings” such as his works included in this lesson, was introduced.
Within the historical context of his times during the Spanish Inquisition, the life of the artist, El Greco, “The Greek,” was presented and his unique, elongated style of art was examined.
Finally, the blending of all the artistic and musical elements into compositions such as Mussorgsky’s and El Greco’s was reviewed.
