Blue Boy
Thomas Gainsborough
January’s Fine Arts Mini Experience (FAME) was taught during the week of January 28th -31st and featured the English artist Thomas Gainsborough’s “The Blue Boy” , and the Austrian composer Wolfgang Mozart’s composition “Sonata in C Major”.
Students learned about art in 18th century England and how Thomas Gainsborough became a famous artist in his own lifetime. We studied the clothing in several paintings, and noticed the way light and shadow emphasized the rich silks the subjects were wearing. Finally, the classes were told where they could go and visit the original “Blue Boy” (and “Pinkie”) right here in California! (at the Huntington Museum)
Mozart’s amazing variations of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” were enjoyed by the students, and the parts and tempos of his “Sonata in G Major” were studied. While listening to the three sections, students showed their understanding of tempo by running (Allegro), walking (Andante) and jogging (Allegretto). We also learned about Mozart’s unusual and tumultuous life, and his unbelievable genius. When there was time, we showed a quick clip from the 1984 film about Mozart – Amadeus.
