Abstract Sculptures from Plaster and Vermiculite
After looking at works by Henry Moore and other sculptors, both abstract and representational, the elective students got to create their own sculptures. The carving block was made of poured plaster and vermiculite (a common gardening compound) The vermiculite made the plaster a bit softer, and more textured -- like sandstone.
They used plastic knives and spoons, nails, sandpaper, and other sculpting tools to create some really terrific work. Their guidelines were to take away from all four corners of their plaster block. They also had to make sure that it was consistent, either angular, or curved. Their final part of the assignment was to place an opening somewhere on the sculpture. To create visual interest.
