Van Gogh's Starry Night
After attending the DeYoung museum's fabulous collection of Post Impressionist artwork, the students were shown a variety of Van Gogh pieces to admire. They learned about back, mid and foreground, and about focal points in a work of art.
The MAIN aspect of Van Gogh's art that the kids were asked to focus on, however, was his style of painting which incorporated bright, vibrant colors and textured dashes of color to create a mood. The sky almost moves with color in Starry Night.
Students were asked to draw their own version of Starry Night (or day!) using oil pastels. They could try to recreate the scene VanGogh had put down, or they were invited to venture of into their own interpretations, as long as the basic elements we had looked at were all there. The final products were really fun!
