Grant Wood's American Gothic
and
Aaron Copland's HoeDown
F.A.M.E. for September
September’s Fine Arts Mini Experience (FAME) was taught during the week of September 21st - 25th and featured the Iowan artist Grant Wood’s painting “American Gothic” and the New York composer Aaron Copland’s composition, “Hoe Down” from the ballet Rodeo. Students were introduced to two uniquely American artists who captured the pulse and mood of America through their creations.
The story behind Grant Wood’s iconic painting was explained to the students and we had a few volunteers dress up to look like the farm couple. Once the students were familiar with the imagery, they were introduced to several spoofs of American Gothic, as well, which was a big hit.
We learned about Aaron Copeland’s composition for “Hoe Down”, and listened to and watched an orchestra play the piece. Students were also shown a video of what Rodeo looked like as a ballet. When there was time, students learned some basic line dancing moves, and they danced the Virginia Reel on their way out of the classroom.
