F.A.M.E. for September
September’s Fine Arts Mini Experience (FAME) was taught during the week of September 22nd - 25th and featured the American artist Winslow Homer’s painting “Breezing up” and the German/British composer George Handel’s composition, “Air” which is part of a larger Suite of music entitled “Water Music”
Water was the theme as Winslow Homer’s seascape provided students the opportunity to review the elements of art composition (line, texture, color and light and shadow). We were also able to discuss the idea of perspective and use of a horizon line. To further cement the image of “Breezing up” in their minds, we created a classroom tableau, which recreated the watery scene…right down to a the salty spray of the waves!
Students were also introduced to other paintings made by Winslow Homer, and learned a little bit about why he decided to start painting in watercolor as his career progressed.
The water theme was extended as students listened to “Air”, one piece of George Handel’s Water Music Suite. They were told the history of Handel’s life, and the story about how and why the Water Music Suite was created. (if you would like to know, make sure to ask your child, and see if he or she remembers!)
